Great Deals On Straight Bows
The elaborate hunting bows of today are descended from the ancient straight bow. Originally straight bows consisted of a half circle composed of wood or some other natural material and some other easily available material acting as a string. The straight bow is simple in design and lacks the fancy trappings of other hunting bows and can be used by shooters whether they are right or left handed. While there are several bows designed to make it easier for hunters to aim and shoot easily, some hunters prefer the straight bow which requires more skill.
A straight bow can require the hunter to draw anywhere from fifty to one hundred pounds of draw weight with their fingers and hold that position while simultaneously securing an aim on the intended target. Because they have to aim and shoot rather quickly to be effective, straight bow hunters pride themselves on their excellent coordination skills.
A perfect straight bow should have a 5-6 foot long stave that is as straight as possible. Flexible saplings that are still green work the best. Apple, ash, black locust, cedar, elm, hemlock, hickory, mulberry, sassafras, willow, and yew are all good woods for a bow stave. Pine is not flexible enough. The stave needs to be a minimum of 1” in diameter, and should have a consistent diameter from end to end.
